Uber CEO Travis Kalanick and the company he leads, the new owners of the tallest building in the world, the $1.3 billion Manhattan office tower, have said they’re working with a group of local partners to put up office space in the building and build more than 50,000 jobs.
Uber, which is trying to scale up to the billion-dollar gig economy, announced its plans to expand its presence in the Manhattan office district on Friday.
In a post on the company’s website, Kalanicks said the company has “committed to bringing the office to the masses” by leasing the building to the firm’s leasing partners.
The company will be responsible for leasing space for 20 percent of its employees, and the rest will be leased to Uber employees.
Kalanackies office will be located on the 14th floor, which currently houses the headquarters of the company, and will be home to its operations, Kalanos office, a new data center, and offices for a number of other top-level employees, according to the company.
The post said Uber would be working with the building’s tenant, an international bank, to build the building out.
Uber has already leased space in a number other high-rise office buildings in Manhattan.
Kalanoos office is set to become the tallest skyscraper in the city on July 7, 2021.
The New York Times reported earlier this year that Uber would spend $5 billion to expand the Manhattan tower.
Kalaniks office, however, will be the tallest office building in New York and will hold some 1.8 million square feet of office space.
A representative for the city said the building will be constructed in phases, with the first phase expected to open in 2019.
The office building will also have parking for up to 8,000 vehicles, according the New Yorkers office, which includes many Uber employees and has offices on the fourth and sixth floors.
The building’s owner, the Hudson River Group, will oversee the office’s operations and the leasing of office equipment and parking, according Kalanans post.
The Times also reported that Uber had leased space for a fleet of up to 500 vehicles and about 150 employees at the building.
Kalanos New York office has been built in phases over the past several years, according his post.
Uber’s previous New York skyscraper, the 11-story Midtown Manhattan tower, was built in the mid-2000s and was eventually completed in 2015.
Uber previously announced it planned to build a large office building for its expansion plans.
Uber plans to add at least 500,000 new employees to its workforce in New Zealand, Ireland, and Australia in the coming years, with a goal of adding 100,000 employees to the United States by 2021.
